Paul’s Blog – June 21, 2025

On Saturday, June 21, volunteers Dwight, Colin, Bruce, Abel, Chris, Reid and Paul braved high temps that broke into triple digits to bring out The Patriot for it’s annual bath, and to get it ready for the Summer season. After starting Engine 104 that was used to move The Patriot out into the sun and for other switching later in the day, we got busy washing, which took the remainder of the morning. It’s a good thing we had water spraying to help cool off while the sun was burning us up! With Engine 102 all cleaned up, it was time to break for lunch and head to the air conditioned break room.

After lunch, the crew split up to start moving equipment, and to get The Patriot started and checked over for use the remainder of the Summer. We used Engine 104 to switch out Engine 103 to another shop track for work coming in July. Our Halloween car was then parked back on the storage track. With the switching done, Engine 104 was parked, and The Patriot had a short test run to grab the cabooses and pull them back into the shop yard and ready for use at the next event.

Overall, the crew did great work in extreme heat to get lots of items completed while being safe. I have included a few pictures of today’s action.

A very successful Father’s Day event!

Father’s Day weekend train rides, Saturday June 14!

Paul’s Blog – June 7, 2025

On Saturday, June 7, volunteers Dwight, Colin, Bruce, Abel, Nick, and Paul worked to get the Museum outhouse cart back in service. Earlier in the week, Kendall replaced the deck boards and painted the cart, and today the group got the outhouse installed on the cart, bolted down, and relocated back to the collection area by Union Depot. This maneuver required moving the AT&SF caboose out of the way – which required using the Trackmobile – and then the Gang Car moved the outhouse cart.

After completing this important work, we cleaned off the engines in the Trackmobile and the Gang Car. Some de-greaser and the pressure washer made quick work on this. Bruce also did some more work to the C&W Caboose interior.

I have included a few pictures of today’s activity.

Paul’s Blog – May 31, 2025

On Saturday, May 31, volunteers Dwight, Colin, Chris, Bruce and Paul spent this last day of May spiking down some track we are building out in the yard, and performing some other small work around the shop. After a quick break for lunch, the crew worked to get a speeder running so we could rescue the outhouse cart and get it ready for a much needed deck replacement. The weather and sun have done a job on the old deck planks and it was deemed that it has now become a hazard. Watch for results in the coming weeks.

Here are a few pictures capturing the action today!

Paul’s Blog – May 24, 2025

On Saturday, May 24, volunteers Ron, Jackie, John, Dwight, Colin, Reid, Kendall, Bruce, Chris, Dannis, Nick and Paul enjoyed the first day of the Memorial Day weekend with nice weather and a good group of guests who came out to ride the Museum’s train. We had riders waiting for the train when we got to the depot a few minutes before 10:00, and there was a steady stream all the way through until we tied up at 2:00! We noted many people who were on their first time visit to the Museum, and we even had some out of state guests. Is our advertising working that well?!

Thanks to a good crew, we had a successful event, and many happy people who enjoyed taking a short ride on the cabooses or the locomotive. Make plans to come out to the next event on Father’s Day in June!

I have included a few pictures I was able to capture of today’s event.

Paul’s Blog – May 10, 2025

On Saturday, May 10, volunteers Dwight, Chris, Bruce, Kendall and Paul did some planning and basic layout work for the new track we have started working on, so we know where to excavate and where the track will be on the grounds. After we completed that work, we did some adjustments to a guardrail in the existing track leading to the new rails.

After a quick lunch break, the crew did some work to see if a set of metal steps we have will work to replace the old wood steps leading into the gift shop. They seem like they will work well for at least this season, so we will do some safety work to these steps and gat them attached. We then headed back to the shop yard and did some more track adjustment and some excavation work before tying up for the day.

I have attached some photos of today’s work below.

Paul’s Blog – May 3, 2025

On Saturday, May 3, volunteers Dwight Maxey, Chris Pollard, Bruce Davis, Kendall Crouch, Reid Adams, Colin Mellin, Dannis Hudson, Nick Walker and Paul Brown spent the day spreading out 45 tons of crushed asphalt in three different areas of the shop yard, and cleaning up some parts of the shop. There was also some tree trimming happening on some of the large Elm and Locust trees. There was not a lot of detail work, just big areas of spread out work. The work done today will hopefully control some areas that get very muddy when we get rain or snow. Many thanks to these volunteers for getting the work completed!

I have included a few photos to show some of the work done today.
