The Pueblo Railway Museum is announcing a new Junior Associate Membership level for our young railfans between 15 and 18 years old. Junior Associate Membership is only $20/year, just half the price of a regular adult membership! To apply, get your parent’s permission, then fill out our online form here, or click this link to download and print the paper application.

Junior Associate Memberships renew during the first two months of each year. We’ll send you a helpful reminder each January when it’s time to renew. You are not required to live in the Pueblo area or to attend meetings to be a Junior Associate Member. Memberships are not transferable.

On Saturday, May 10, volunteers Dwight, Chris, Bruce, Kendall and Paul did some planning and basic layout work for the new track we have started working on, so we know where to excavate and where the track will be on the grounds. After we completed that work, we did some adjustments to a guardrail in the existing track leading to the new rails.

After a quick lunch break, the crew did some work to see if a set of metal steps we have will work to replace the old wood steps leading into the gift shop. They seem like they will work well for at least this season, so we will do some safety work to these steps and gat them attached. We then headed back to the shop yard and did some more track adjustment and some excavation work before tying up for the day.

On Saturday, May 3, volunteers Dwight Maxey, Chris Pollard, Bruce Davis, Kendall Crouch, Reid Adams, Colin Mellin, Dannis Hudson, Nick Walker and Paul Brown spent the day spreading out 45 tons of crushed asphalt in three different areas of the shop yard, and cleaning up some parts of the shop. There was also some tree trimming happening on some of the large Elm and Locust trees. There was not a lot of detail work, just big areas of spread out work. The work done today will hopefully control some areas that get very muddy when we get rain or snow. Many thanks to these volunteers for getting the work completed!

On Saturday, April 26, volunteers Dwight Maxey, Bruce Davis, Chris Pollard, Polly Cotton, Dannis Hudson, Nick Walker and Paul Brown started work in damp cloudy conditions to move a stack of 90# rail to a different spot in the shop yard. This work took a bit more time because our large forklift didn’t want to run properly, so the Bobcat came to the rescue again, though it can only lift two sticks of rail at one time. Dannis and Nick jumped on some clean up work clearing some fallen branches and the ever-present blown in tumble weeds. Polly worked to clean the caboose interiors and Engine 104’s cab.

After a quick lunch break, and the sun making its appearance, the crew got busy prepping some areas for a future delivery of crushed asphalt that we will spread in a few areas. We also filled in some low spots on the grounds that always collect water and turn into mud pits. We finished up the day moving some materials around the yard for better storage in the space we have. Overall, a good day with a lot of little projects getting done.

On Saturday, April 19, volunteers Ron Roach, John McDowell, Jackie Anzlovar, Michael Brown, Ben Bevel, Dwight Maxey, Bruce Davis, Chris Pollard, Kendall Crouch, Reid Adams, Colin Mellin, Dannis Hudson, Abel Erber, Nick Walker, Polly Cotton, Nick Valdez and Paul Brown all braved another typical cold and snowy Easter weekend to host our guests who came out to enjoy a short train ride on the Museum tracks. We had a fairly good turnout of guests who didn’t mind the cold, cloudy conditions, and were treated to a wide variety of passing trains on the neighboring BNSF and UP lines. There was even an “airplane train”, a regular movement of 737 fuselages from Kansas to Washington.

The four-hour event went by quickly as folks rolled in steadily through the event. While it wasn’t as nice as last year, we still had a good turnout. And the crew all did great work with safety as a priority. I have included a few pictures of some of the action today.

The Pueblo Railway Museum is excited to kick off our 2025 train ride season with our Easter Bunny Express train rides on Saturday, April 19. Train rides will be available from 11AM to 3PM behind the Pueblo Union Depot. Train ride tickets are $15 for a ride in the engine, and $10 for a ride in one of the cabooses. Children under 3 ride the train free! Cash or check only, please. Train ride tickets can only be purchased during the events. Purchase your tickets at our Gift Shop, a converted caboose behind the Depot, near our passenger loading area. Trains depart every 20 minutes, so there will be multiple opportunities during the event to ride the train.

Our special circus train will be on display, in cooperation with the Pueblo Downtown Association. There is no admission fee to attend the event itself. The charge is only for the train ride.

On Saturday, April 12, volunteers Dwight Maxey, Chris Pollard, Bruce Davis, Colin Mellin, Reid Adams, Polly Cotton, Dannis Hudson, Abel Erber, Nick Walker and Paul Brown spread out to all corners of the shop yard to get work done. Dannis, Abel, Nick and Paul worked on the track spur at the Trolley stall. Bruce and Chris continued work in the C&W Caboose, while Polly was decorating the cabooses for the upcoming Easter event. Colin kept busy with a number of maintenance items, and Reid jumped in a bit later to help all around. Now this was all before lunch.

After lunch, the whole crew jumped in to switch the cabooses back into our regular train set and then headed out on the Trackmobile to clear flangeways on our crossings. Everyone was working hard to adjust to the 90+ temperatures we had in Pueblo! On Saturday, March 29, volunteers Dwight Maxey, Colin Mellin, Chris Pollard, Reid Adams, Bryan Tong, Dannis Hudson, Abel Erber, Polly Cotton and Paul Brown stayed busy today doing a variety of work. While the biggest group got busy firing up and checking out Locomotive 104 and the Cabooses, Chris stayed busy cleaning the inside of the Rohr, one of our pieces of high speed equipment, while Colin did some checks on the Bobcat and investigated pricing for badly needed new tires. And Polly cleaned our break room which was needed and very much appreciated! The crew on the train did some work to establish good markers for the end of our running track, check some switch stand operation, and moved and rearranged a few freight cars on one of our storage tracks.

After parking the train set back at the shop, the crew took a quick lunch break before heading out to work on clearing dirt from our running track, and working to fix some horn valve issues on Engine 104. We even had some visitors to the shop area who were able to get some nice tours. The crew finished up and got out of town before the rain moved in.

I have only got a few pictures of the train operation today as it was tough to keep up with all of the action today!

On Saturday, March 22, volunteers Dwight Maxey, Chris Pollard, Bruce Davis, Kendall Crouch, Colin Mellin, Dannis Hudson, Nick Walker and Paul Brown cleared out weeds from the collection area and swept the platforms to get the Museum ready for our Spring and Summer events. This is always considered important work to keep the Museum neat looking, and to reduce the fire hazard.

After a quick lunch break, the wind started blowing pretty heavy, so the crew stayed close to the shop and worked on a variety of small work. There is always work to be done at the Museum, and some day we might make a dent in the project list!

On Saturday, March 15, volunteers Dwight Maxey, Bruce Davis, Kendall Crouch, Chris Pollard, Colin Mellin, Dannis Hudson, Abel Erber, Nick Walker, Dallan Farrar and Paul Brown took advantage of a warm, sunny winter day to build out some more track on our spur track project. The crew prepped the ground, and then laid out cross ties before placing tie plates to set the rail on. Once the rail was spotted, the joint bars were installed and bolts tightened.

The crew had a quick lunch, and then continued work adjusting the ties supporting the rails to get things somewhat level. The afternoon also saw Bruce doing some more work on the C&W Caboose, and Chris and Dwight worked to get the Gang Car back together and fire up the engine to test run. The crew finished up by putting tools away and then participating in a little bull session to finish off the day. Keep watching here as our track project progresses. Some day we will have a couple more shop tracks!
